Illustration of the stages of a root canal therapy
A root canal treatment is usually carried out when a tooth has been damaged from decay or fracture beyond what a filling can solve. It may be also needed when a dentist wants to put a crown or bridge over a particular tooth. It is a great alternative to removing a tooth.
The procedure is painless, because injection is often given at the start. The dentist would remove any decay or previous filling and locate the canals in the roots, then proceed to clean them out using instruments and flushing same out with an antiseptic fluid. At the end of the treatment, the root canals are completely sealed and filled with a material and the tooth covered with a filling material until a crown is done.
Root canal therapy is usually completed in one, two or three visits, depending on the condition of your tooth.
