Many gum problems can be prevented or even treated by scaling and polishing (cleaning) but sometimes, there may be the need for more. Gum disease is responsible for bleeding gums, bad breath and is even associated with serious health conditions.
The progression of gum problems is from gingivitis (gum inflammation) to periodontitis (inflammation involving other tissues around the teeth) to teeth drifting apart to them shaking and even falling off. Hence, it is not old age that necessarily causes teeth to fall out!
Nene dental centre has dentists and dental therapists who can treat various problems of the tissues that surround the teeth (periodontium).
A patient receiving oral hygiene instructions: an important part of any gum treatment
This procedure is mostly used to treat a pocket, which is essentially a hole in your gum bored by a cycle of bacterial invasion plus direct injury to the gum by tooth-picking as well as poor hygiene methods over time. Common symptoms of this is food particularly meat, trapping in the gum, right in between the teeth.
The professional would use instruments to clean out this area. You may be given some anaesthetic to numb the area so that you do not feel pain. Experiencing some bleeding is normal.
If your gums are quite enlarged as a result of a medical condition, drugs or other causes, then they may need to be shaped by surgical means after the underlying conditions are sorted out.
On the other hand, gingival recession, which happens when your gums have been destroyed, particularly by hard brushing, can be corrected by another type of surgery.
